Kode9’s hyperdub sound is difficult to define, sometimes with beats, sometimes without, sometimes with a vocalist, sometimes without – the only continuity is the heavy sub bass. Currently, Kode9’s dj sets travel through a selection of sub-bass driven, heavy skank with off-key synths, drawing from the best of UK underground scenes such as dubstep, grime, UK house and garage. Originally from Glasgow, Scotland, Kode9 is now based in South London and runs the record label Hyperdub (releasing artists such as Burial, Spaceape, Warrior Queen, the Bug, Samiyam, Darkstar, Zomby, Ikonika, LV, and Quarta330 and commissioning remixes from the likes of Flying Lotus, Dabrye and Rustie). For 4 years, he hosted the weekly Fwd>> show on London grime and dubstep pirate radio station Rinse Fm and is one of the rotating djs at the seminal dubstep nights DMZ and Forward>> in London. He has released tracks on Aphex Twin’s Rephlex label, pioneering dubstep label Tempa, Soul Jazz, Domino and his own Hyperdub imprint and has remixed artists such as the Junior Boys and Dabrye feat. MF Doom. His dj sets have helped spread the South London sound internationally, to East Asia, Europe, South America, North America and Australia. In 2006 he mixed the Dubstep Allstars Vol.3 CD compilation on Tempa records with vocalist Spaceape and released their debut album, ‘Memories of the Future’. Kode9 has performed at festivals such as Sonar (Spain), Mutek (Ca), Hypersonica and 4 Hype (Brazil), Bangface and Bloc (UK) and Synch (Greece). Kode9 & Spaceape’s new album will be released in the middle of 2009. "[A-Trak]’s established himself as a favorite among the shutter-shades generation, and for good reason. He's great at putting familiar styles into interesting contexts, blurring lines between eras, and just plain knowing what tracks sound good next to each other." -- PITCHFORK "If there's an art to live mixing and mashing for a dance floor, A-Trak is something of a Rembrandt." -- LA TIMES Saturday, July 18 ![]() BEARACUDA Boyshapedbox [San Francisco] Sam Storicks [Portland] 9pm. $5.00 at the door. Doctor Adam [Hot Mess/Townbombing] 8pm. $15.00 advance tickets. $20.00 at the door. Tickets available at www.brownpapertickets.com. BUY YOUR TICKETS HERE! The Glitch Mob is a four man musical collaboration with roots from San Francisco and Los Angeles. What initially started as a joke/loose affiliation soon stuck as edIT, Boreta, Kraddy and Ooah found themselves frequently playing the same shows and eventually tag teaming during back to back time slots. This eventually led to the four man sonic onslaught of ferocious bass, head cracking drums and infinitely complex rhythms. A proverbial Voltron effect on stage. Taking influences from hip-hop, experimental, and dance genres, The Glitch Mob have crafted their own form of futuristic dance floor hip-hop that has been “slaying” audiences world wide. Their live sets reinvent the dj “tag-team” concept with four performers on stage at once, interacting like a jazz combo, each taking the lead at intuitive moments, interweaving their own sounds, and remixing everything on the fly. The result is a sound distinctly their own, blending the deep head nod of hip-hop with serious bass music, throwing genre distinctions out the window. The Glitch Mob has been one of the cornerstones of this new electronic hip hop movement that has emerged from Glasgow to Montreal and back to Los Angeles. Taking a nod from the resurgence in the instrumental hip-hop “beats” movement, the Glitch Mob has injected a great sense of dance floor sensibility into the scene and crafted their own niche as new school dance floor destroyers. Members of The Glitch Mob have individually released music on their own imprint Glitch Mob Unlimited which is a subsidiary of Los Angeles’ Alpha Pup Records. They plan to release their first full length album in 2009. Thursday, July 30 ![]() SOUL CLAP DJ Jonathan Toubin DJ Beyonda 9pm. $3.00 at the door. AUGUST Saturday, August 1 ![]() Giant Squid Thrones Grayceon Sedan 9pm. $7.00 at the door. GIANT SQUID Giant Squid is touring in support of their recently released [Feb '09] 2nd full-length album, entitled The Ichthyologist, which was recorded at the Red Room in Seattle by Matt Bayles (Mastodon, Minus the Bear, Botch) and features guest appearances by members of Neurosis, Crisis, The Gathering and Amber Asylum. The Ichthyologist is a concept album of grand scale. Through the thoughts of the album's protagonists, a man stripped of his humanity and left with nothing but the sea in front of him, comes a story about adapting in inhuman ways to survive the shock of human loss and total emotional tragedy, becoming something else entirely in the process. "The Ichthyologist invokes the elemental force of Neurosis, the cinematic scope of God Speed You Black Emperor, and the attitude of punk rock." – Revolver Magazine "Sublimely textured but crushingly heavy, deep as the ocean at its heart and yet instantly approachable, this is more than a great metal album—it is a beautiful work of art, by any standard." – metalreview.com "Giant Squid's dynamic prog metal led by skillful male and female vocalists and sparse but evocative cello, oboe, violin and trumpet are one of the most effective evokers of tender romantic moods in metal since psychedelic doomsters Anathema, being sensitive but not sappy." - peacedogman.com GRAYCEON Grayceon features members of Amber Asylum (Neurot), Giant Squid and Walken and their newest album, This Grand Show was released in Nov '08 on Vendlus Records. The band pulls together an extremely diverse range of musical influences and writing styles to create a fresh sound that defies the boundaries of the metal/rock/progressive genres. Alternate low tuning on both cello and guitar, finger picked metal riffs, dreamy double vocals, and unpredictably impeccable drumming all meet to give Grayceon their unique sensibility. "...a dreamy, eclectic mix of cello driven post rock thrash mix that comes across like Apocalyptica, Neurosis and Metallica capped off with a Nyquil fueled lullaby." - Teeth of the Divine "The lean and powerful, controlled tumbling riffs and percussion sometimes evoke fleeting thoughts of Mastodon, and although the band ebbs and flows, contrary to master architects Neurosis, these aren't the kind of earth shifting, blow your hair back crescendos, but more subtle movements that are natural, dexterous, and almost unassuming in comparison." - metalreview.com Thursday, August 6 ![]() Nebula Entrance VALIS 9pm. $10.00 advance tickets. $12.00 at the door. Los Angeles based trio 'Nebula', comprised of Eddie Glass (Guitar/Vocals), English geezer Tom Davies (Bass/Vocals) & Rob Oswald (Drums). It all started when Eddie & friend Neil Blender were making weird 4 track music for skate movie's like 'Alien Workshops' first video. He then went on to drum for 'Olivelawn' and later on played guitar with 'Fu Manchu', writing some of the songs and playing lead guitar on the first three albums. In 1997 Eddie decided it was time to use the whole arsenal - Guitars, Drums, Moogs, Sitars, The Jug and formed Nebula. Tom crossed the pond in the summer of 2004 to join the Nebula ranks and with the recent addition in early 2007 of Rob (Karma To Burn/Mondo Generator), Nebula are re-igniting the fires started in '97. Five albums later - one on 'Relapse', two on 'Sub Pop', a couple of EP's on 'Meteor City' and now the long gone 'Mans Ruin' and a long list of records with 'Cargo Sweet Nothing', Nebula continues it's long ties with the extreme sports community, featured regularly in soundtracks to movies, TV shows like 'Viva la Bam' and 'Monster Garage' and on video games including 'Tony Hawk's Underground 2' and NHL 2007. After appearances at the 'X-Games', Los Angeles' 'Sunset Junction' Festival and numerous tours in Europe, Australia, Japan, South America and many North American tours with the likes of Mudhoney, J Mascis & The Fog and The Hellacopters, Nebula have recently returned from a month long festival tour in Europe and will continue to tour as long as god & man is willing.
